Good Friday, observed by Christians across the globe, is one of the most solemn and significant days in the Christian calendar. It commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at Calvary, an event that lies at the heart of Christian belief.

Falling on the Friday before Easter Sunday, Good Friday marks the culmination of Holy Week and sets the stage for the celebration of Jesus' resurrection, which Christians believe occurred on Easter.

Why Is It Called ‘Good’ Friday Despite Jesus’ Death?

Though the day marks the painful death of Jesus, it is referred to as "Good" because Christians believe his sacrifice led to the forgiveness of sins and eternal salvation for humankind.

Religious Significance for Christians

According to Christian belief, Jesus was arrested, tried, and sentenced to death by crucifixion under the Roman governor Pontius Pilate. He was mocked, beaten, and forced to carry his cross to the hill of Calvary, where he was nailed to it and died a painful death.

Christians believe that Jesus died to atone for the sins of humanity, offering a path to salvation through his suffering and sacrifice.

How Good Friday Is Observed in India

Good Friday is not a celebration in the traditional sense but a day of deep mourning, prayer, and reflection. Observances vary across Christian denominations and regions, but common traditions include:

Church Services: Special services are held, often in the afternoon (between 12:00 pm and 3:00 pm), to mark the hours Jesus hung on the cross.

Stations of the Cross: Devotees walk through the 14 Stations of the Cross, depicting Jesus’ final moments.

Scripture Readings: The Passion narratives — accounts of Jesus’ arrest, trial, and crucifixion — are read aloud from the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John.

Fasting and Abstinence: Many believers fast or avoid non-vegetarian food as an act of penance.
