COVID-19: India registers 13,154 new cases, 43% higher than yesterday; Omicron tally rises to 961

New Delhi: India is witnessing a major surge in COVID infections as 13,154 new cases were reported in the last 24 hours, taking the total tally to 3,48,22,040 said the Health Ministry data on Thursday.

The active cases currently stand at 82,402 cases, which is one per cent of the total cases, while 268 people have died in the last 24 hours pushing the death toll to 4,80,860.

The tally of recoveries rose to 3,42,58,778 as 7,486 people recovered from the disease in the last 24 hours.

Delhi reported 923 fresh cases, which marked a steep rise from the 496 detected a day earlier. The positivity rate also jumped up to 1.29 percent. Among other cities, Mumbai registered a huge spike, recording 2,510 cases. Moreover, 400 infections were detected in Bengaluru, 540 in Kolkata and 294 in Chennai.

Meanwhile cases of the new variant of COVID-19 Omicron has also risen to 961 on Thursday across the country, with 263 cases in Delhi and 252 in Maharashtra. Gujarat has reported 97 cases, Rajasthan 69, and Kerala 65.

Of the 961 Omicron cases, 320 have recovered and have been discharged.

The government has been continuously speeding up the vaccination drive across the country.

According to the bulletin issued by the Ministry on Thursday, 67.64 Crore tests for COVID-19 have been done so far.

“India has administered 143.83 cr doses of COVID-19 vaccine so far under the ongoing nationwide vaccination drive” Ministry data said. (UNI)
