COVID-19: Kerala alone accounts for 68% of India’s new caseload

New Delhi: India recorded 46,164 fresh infections, with Kerala alone accounting for 68 per cent of the caseload in the past 24 hours, data shared by Union Health Ministry on Thursday showed.

According to the data, an increase of 8,571 cases was reported from the previous day when the country had recorded 37,593 infections.

The prime reason behind the single-day rise is an unusual spike of 31,445 cases reported in Kerala during the same period.

Besides, the infection rate has soared to 2.5 per cent.

As per the data, the new cases have pushed the cumulative case tally to 32,558,530 whereas the death toll has climbed to 4,36,365 after 607 more people succumbed to the viral infection.

Currently, the active caseload stands at 3,33,725, the figures showed.

The active cases now account for more than 1 per cent of total cases, the Ministry said.

Meanwhile, 34,158 more people recovered from the Covid-19 in the last 24 hours pushing the recoveries to 3,17,88,440. The recovery rate now stands at 97.63 per cent.

The Ministry stated that the weekly positivity rate (2.02 per cent) has been under 3 per cent for two months now.

Meanwhile, the daily positivity rate (2.58 per cent) was less than 3 per cent for the last 62 days, it added.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), a total of 51,31,29,378 samples were tested till date. Of these, 17,87,283 tests were carried out on Wednesday.

Besides, under the nationwide Covid-19 vaccination programme, 60.38 crore vaccine doses have been administered to eligible population aged above 18 years. (UNI)
