Kolkata: Conjunctivitis does not spread “by” looking at a person having the infection, a myth that needs to be rectified, according to Dr. Subhasish Das, Consultant Ophthalmologist, Manipal Hospital Salt Lake, Kolkata.

" Conjunctivitis is the inflammation of the conjunctiva. Conjunctiva is the thin transparent layer covering the white portion of our external eye and a reaction of conjunctiva ” is known as conjunctivitis. “Redness” of the eye seen during the infection is due to the inflammation of the conjunctiva, " he said.

Conjunctivitis is basically of three types viz. bacterial, allergic, and viral. Endemic conjunctivitis is due to a viral infection, the virus is very infectious and spreads rapidly. “Spread” of the virus is witnessed during seasonal changes such as the end of the rainy season. Often, September-October is the month when most cases are observed and the infection remains for 7-10 days showing signs of redness and itching.

It is also important to know that conjunctivitis in any case does not harm the eyesight and there is any chance of recurrence of the infection in the person who was previously infected.

Personal precautionary measures are vital to prevent conjunctivitis spread. We need to make a point “ “not to touch our eyes with dirty hands. “" In case we need to scratch our eyes, we should keep in mind to use the backside of our hand which is less exposed to the things that we touch especially while traveling in public transport. "

Frequent washing of eyes and hands with cold water is advised during these seasons when virus takes a toll. Avoiding the usage of particulars of the person suffering from the infection and maintaining hygiene will certainly prevent the spread." Often, we misjudge and ignore redness of the eyes as conjunctivitis, it can “be” for some other serious reasons also. Consulting an Ophthalmologist is always advisable in case of any prolonged redness or irritation in the eyes, " he added.(UNI)
