Jammu: The first-ever human milk bank is likely to come up at one of the hospitals here, official sources said on Thursday.

"The first human milk bank is expected to be established at one of the city hospitals for which preparations are underway," sources in the health department told UNI.

They said that a human milk bank has been proposed for which preparations are in the pipeline, adding, “as some babies remain ill or admitted in the ICUs. In some cases, mothers are found unhealthy and the concern motivated the health department to establish the first human milk bank."

"The bank will benefit babies whose mothers are unable to breastfeed them due to some infections or other reasons and will prevent diarrhoea and pneumonia like diseases among newly born," they said.

"Some mothers cannot breastfeed their babies owing to several reasons such as sickness, medical contraindications, inadequate lactation, surrogacy/IVF and in such conditions, human milk banks can come to the rescue of them," they added.

"The lactating mothers can donate milk, which can be used for around six months after pasteurizing it," sources added.

"Pasteurised donor milk may be used for premature babies, those born to mothers having breastfeeding difficulties, who are on certain medications or those suffering from infectious diseases," they said. (UNI)
