Imaging Tech to identify medicinal plants

New Delhi: Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS), Global Positioning System (GPS) are being used for survey and inventorisation of medicinal plants.These modern technologies are also being currently used for identification of specific location or habitat of plant species, official sources said.Previously, manual survey and inventorisation has been practised widely to identify the location of medicinal plants in India.

Recently, the National Medicinal Plants Board (NMPB) under Ayush Ministry under its Central Sector Scheme on Conservation, Development and Sustainable Management of Medicinal Plants has supported a project titled “Geospatial approach for suitable site identification for conservation of some species of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (MAPs) at selected districts of Uttarakhand” at Uttarakhand Space Application Centre, Dehradun.Another project implemented is “Inventorisation, Digitisation and web enabling of the Geo-spatial Maps of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants cultivated in the States of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and Odisha” at the Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (CIMAP), Lucknow.(UNI)
