Elon Musk postpones India trip citing Tesla obligations

Washington: In a surprising turn of events, Tesla's CEO, Elon Musk, has postponed his highly anticipated trip to India, where he was slated to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and unveil plans for the company's entry into the South Asian market.

The trip, initially scheduled for April 22, has been delayed due to what Musk described as "very heavy Tesla obligations."

“Unfortunately, very heavy Tesla obligations require that the visit to India be delayed, but I do very much look forward to visiting later this year,” Musk posted late on Friday on his social media platform X.

Musk's visit to India was highly anticipated, with expectations running high for him to announce a substantial investment of $2 billion to $3 billion, primarily aimed at establishing a Tesla factory within the country. This investment plan was further fuelled by the Indian government's recent policy initiatives aimed at encouraging local manufacturing by reducing tariffs on imported vehicles.

The timing of Musk's planned arrival, just two days after the commencement of general elections in India, added an additional layer of significance to the visit. With Prime Minister Modi widely predicted to secure a rare third term in office, Musk's presence was expected to underscore the government's efforts to attract foreign investment and promote sustainable development.

Despite the setback, Tesla enthusiasts and Indian stakeholders remain hopeful for Musk's future visit and the promise it holds for Tesla's expansion into one of the world's fastest-growing automobile markets. As anticipation builds for Musk's eventual arrival later in the year, attention now shifts to the continued developments and challenges facing Tesla's global ambitions.
