Colombo: Former Sri Lankan cricket captain Sanath Jayasuriya on Thursday slammed the government over fuel privileges reportedly being given to MPs amid an unprecedented shortage of fuel across the island nation.

He said: "I am disturbed to hear that fuel privileges were being given to MPs. They say this has now been stopped. However, we must learn from history."

"Remember the French Revolution and the famous words of Marrie Antoinette about eating cake when people did not have bread," Jayasuriya tweeted.

"MPs are servants of the people not vice versa. People are suffering untold misery. You have three options SOLVE this SOON, suffer WITH us or GO HOME!," he added.

Sri Lanka is currently facing its worst financial and economic crisis since independence in 1948. (UNI)
