London: UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s Diwali celebration hosted at 10, Downing Street, has sparked controversy after alcohol and meat were served at the event, upsetting British Hindus.

The celebration at the PM's official residence was attended by British Hindu community leaders and top politicians and included the lighting of diyas, a Kuchipudi dance performance, and a speech by Starmer

“Without wanting to be named Hindu guests have reportedly expressed their shock and dismay at being served meat and alcohol during a religious celebration,” according to InsightUK, an X handle devoted to the “Social movement of British Hindus & Indians”.

It said Diwali is not just a time for festivity, but also holds a deeply religious meaning. The sacred festival of Diwali emphasizes on purity and devotion and hence traditionally involves vegetarian meals and strict avoidance of alcohol.

It said “The choice of menu at the Diwali celebration hosted by the Prime Minister himself, displays an appalling lack of understanding or respect for the religious traditions associated with the festival of Diwali.”

“It also raises the pertinent question of whether Hindu community organisations and religious leaders were consulted for greater cultural sensitivity and inclusivity.”

It urged for greater consideration in future events and celebrations, which are intended to promote multiculturalism and inclusivity, but are not mindful of the cultural and religious practices of the communities they seek to honor.

The UK PM had posted on X on October 31: “Happy Diwali to all those celebrating across the UK, I wish you and your family a joyful celebration.

“This is a time of coming together, abundance and welcome, and a moment to fix our eyes on the light which always triumphs over the darkness.”
