Mumbai: Samajwadi Party (SP) leader and MLA Abu Azmi was suspended from the Maharashtra Assembly on Wednesday over his controversial remark praising Mughal ruler Aurangzeb.
Azmi has been suspended till the end of Maharashtra legislature’s ongoing budget session, which is set to conclude on March 26.
State minister Chandrakant Patil had on Tuesday introduced the motion for suspension of Azmi in the lower house.
Treasury bench members argued that praising Aurangzeb was an insult to Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and his son Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj.
The motion was approved through a voice vote.
Azmi had apologised for it after making the remark.
Multiple FIRs (first information reports) have also been registered against him in Mumbai and Thane.
