Lucknow: Even before the GST Council started its 45th meeting on Friday, Uttar Pradesh Finance Minister Suresh Khanna made it clear that the state was against any proposal to bring diesel and petrol in the GST ambit.

"We are opposed to petroleum products being under GST," Khanna told UNI before the Council members assembled for the crucial meet in the state capital.

Opposition ruled states like Maharashtra and Kerala have already rejected any plan to bring the two auto fuels in the new indirect tax regime stating it will cause massive revenue loss for the states.

They also do not want to cede their taxing power any further at this point of time.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister Ajit Pawar had on Thursday said that he would oppose any plan of the Centre to bring auto fuels under GST.

Ahead of the Council meet, he had said that any decision which will adversely affect the revenue for the state would be opposed.

The GST Council is holding its first in-person meeting today after a gap of almost 18 months due to Coronavirus pandemic. (UNI)
