The outdoor services at the government-owned R G Kar Medical in the city were affected on Saturday after the junior doctors and postgraduate trainees resorted to cease work protesting the alleged rape and murder of a 2nd year postgraduate lady trainee in the hospital, even after the Kolkata Police set up an SIT to probe the mysterious death.
The leader of the opposition, Suvendu Adhikari, has demanded a CBI probe to unravel the circumstances that led to the death of the 28-year-old lady trainee doctor. Unconfirmed reports suggest that there are signs of strangulation and traces of seminal fluid. This is a clear case of murder (with the probability of rape). The case should be immediately transferred to the CBI (@CBIHeadquarters."
Kolkata Police, meanwhile, arrested a suspect identified as Sanjay Roy in relation to the mysterious death. The bereaved parents claimed their daughter was raped and murdered and demanded an independent probe.
Ruling Trinamool Congress spokesman Santanu Sen said Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee spoke to the bereaved parents, while Kolkata Police set up an eleven-member SIT for investigation into the death.
"Instead, the state government has formed an eleven-member inquiry committee for this incident. Strangely, some of the committee members are interns. In my opinion, the state government is either trying to sweep the matter under the rug so that the negligence on their part doesn't get exposed or they are not at all serious about this matter," Adhikari said in a post on his X handle.
The initial police probe revealed the body had multiple injury marks in the chest was found in the seminar room on the 3rd floor of the emergency building.
The semi-nude body of a woman post-graduate trainee doctor was found inside the seminar hall around 11 a.m. on Friday, as the deceased had night duty up to 2 a.m. and then went to rest after having dinner with other colleagues.
The victim’s mother said her daughter was found in a semi-naked condition with her spectacles broken.“An autopsy report suggests that she was sexually assaulted and murdered. We have registered a case of murder,” a senior Kolkata Police officer said.
The autopsy report confirmed the presence of blood marks on the woman’s private parts, mouth, and eyes, while there were injuries on her face, belly, left ankle, neck, right ring finger, and lips.
"A bone near the neck region was broken, suggesting that she was probably throttled to death,” the officer said.
"I urge the student community to raise their voice against the lackadaisical attitude of the state government, especially the medical students, who should protest vehemently. I will extend all the support to the student fraternity as long as the deceased student doesn't get justice," the Nandigram MLA said.
Meanwhile, the outdoor treatment facilities at the RG Kar Hospital were affected after the junior doctors and postgraduate trainees began to cease work on Friday, demanding fair treatment and protection of the medics.
The junior medics also began a marching protest from the RG Kar Hospital to Shyambazar five-point and back before a stage-in-protest.
The junior doctors said they would not attend non-emergency services in the hospital.A batch of senior police officials arrived this morning for investigation, including DC North.A police camp was set up to ensure the law and order situation in the hospital.Protests happened at different government hospitals in the city and on the on the outskirts, sources said.(UNI)
