Bengal Govt to start ‘cage culture’ of fish

Bengal Govt to start ‘cage culture’ of fish
, Saturday, 11 November 2017 (11:26 IST)
Kolkata : The Fisheries Department of the West Bengal
Government is going to start, for the first time, ‘cage culture’ of fish on
a commercial scale.

The fishes would be cultivated in brackish water bodies across the state.
Earlier, similar fish culture has been done by various government and
private organisations, but on much smaller scales.

This kind of fish culture would be conducted in the brackish water bodies
owned by the State Fisheries Development Corporation (SFDC) as well as
by fishery cooperatives and people engaged in the fishery business.

As of now, it has been decided to employ 80 cages, 18 of which would
be used by SFDC and the rest distributed among the bodies mentioned
earlier, in the districts of Purba Medinipur and North and South 24
Parganas.

If this venture turns out to be successful commercially, the government
has plans to do start similar activities in freshwater bodies as well as in
marine zones. (UNI)
