Kolkata: Former BJP MP Roopa Ganguly was on Thursday arrested and taken to Kolkata Police Headquarters Lalbazar for allegedly obstructing police work at the Bansdroni police station in south Kolkata where a class IX student was crushed to death by an excavator (payloader), official sources said.

Ganguly, a famed actor in the mega serial Mahabharat in the late 80s as Droupadi, was on a protest in the Bansdroni police station since yesterday after a 15-year-old boy was crushed to death by the payloader.

A senior police officer told reporters that they have arrested Roopa Ganguly for alleged obstruction of police work at the station.

Ganguly was arrested around 10 am and she was taken to Lalbazar, which would produce her to a court later today.

Police said they have also arrested five suspects, who allegedly disturbed the policemen for probing in the crush case at Bansdroni.

BJP state president Sukanta Ganguly said their legal team was working already to get her released.

He alleged police action was illegal, saying the payloader driver was not arrested yet but Ganguly and five others, who had protested the tragic death, were arrested.

Majumdar also alleged it was an act of police high handedness on behalf of the ruling party.
