New Delhi: A Delhi court on Saturday adjourned till August 20 the hearing in the bail application of former Jawahar Lal Nehru (JNU) student leader Umar Khalid, who was arrested under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act in the northeast Delhi riots case.

Additional Sessions Judge Amitabh Rawat adjourned the matter till August 20 for further hearing.

Khalid was arrested on September 13, 2020, in the northeast Delhi riots case, which was being investigated by Special Cell and he was charged under the stringent UAPA.

The Police have also registered cases against students Natasha Narwal and Devangana Kalita from JNU, Jamia Coordination Committee members Safoora Zargar, Jamia's Asif Iqbal Tanha, former Aam Aadmi Party councilor Tahir Hussain, and several others under the provisions of UAPA besides Umar Khalid.

On the last date of hearing, Delhi Police had filed its reply stating that the bail petition is meritless.

It was submitted that the application filed by Umar Khalid has no merit so the prosecution does not seek to file a detailed reply to the present application and requested the court to dismiss the application.

Delhi Police submitted that the present case was registered on March 3, 2020, and a total of 21 accused persons have been arrested in the case to date, out of which charge sheet qua 18 accused persons has still in progress.(UNI)
