New Delhi: Amid prevailing cold wave conditions in the national capital, the Delhi government on Sunday extended the winter vacations from nursery to class 5 till January 12.

"Schools in Delhi will remain closed for the next 5 days due to the prevailing cold weather conditions for students from Nursery to Class 5," said Delhi Education Minister Atishi Marlean.

On Saturday, the Delhi government issued an order extending the winter break until January 10. But hours later, the Directorate of Education retracted the order, saying it was "incorrectly issued."

Officials said a decision on whether to reopen the schools amid the cold weather conditions will be taken on Sunday.

Meanwhile, several parts of Delhi-NCR woke up to dense fog on Sunday, accompanied by a bone-chilling cold wave.

The national capital, already grappling with chilly weather, experienced a further dip in temperature as the cold wave tightened its grip.

The minimum temperature in the national capital on Sunday was recorded at 8.2 degrees, one notch above normal.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast suggests dense to very dense fog and cold day to severe cold day conditions are likely at a few places over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Rajasthan in the next two days. Dense fog is predicted at isolated places over Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh.

The cold wave conditions are expected to prevail in isolated places in Rajasthan and West Uttar Pradesh. (UNI)
