Nashik: The city police have arrested a fraudster who allegedly duped a scientist from Tamil Nadu of Rs five crore by luring him to get the governor's post.
The Nashik Central Crime Branch arrested suspect Niranjan Suresh Kulkarni (age 40, resident of Sevan Shri Apartment, Gandharva Nagari, Nashik Road) from Nagpur, police said.
Police investigation has revealed that he had demanded a 'service fee' of Rs 15 crore from Narasimha Reddy Damodar Reddy Apuri (56, a businessman and scientist from Chennai) for getting the governor's post.
The suspect lured Reddy by claiming to have political connections and assured him that he would get the governor's post of any small or big state.
Believing in him, Reddy had paid Rs 5,08,99,876 to the suspect between February seven and April two, 2024.
Reddy paid him Rs 60 lakh in cash and transferred the remaining money from his own and relatives' bank accounts to the suspect's bank account, sources added.
