Massive protest outside PHQ against Delhi Police in support of Jamia students

New Delhi:Students and other people gathered in large number on Sunday night outside the Old Delhi Police Headquarters building at the ITO, protesting against the police in support of the Jamia Millia Islamia students against the way how police handled the situation in the varsity area.

People gathered outside the PHQ at ITO, raising anti-Delhi Police slogans, questioning as to why the police entered the campus area and used tear gas shells at the students.It is being said that the Jamia and the JNU students  appealed to many students and the public through a Whatsapp message, to gather outside the Police Headquarters in support of the JMI and against the Delhi Police's conduct in handling the situation.

The JNU students were appealed to mobilise with immediate effect in the evening, a protestor said.Meanwhile, on the instructions of Delhi Police, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has shut entry and exit points at several stations, including Sukhdev Vihar, Jamia Millia Islamia, Okhla Vihar, Jasola Vihar Shaheen Bagh, Vasant Vihar, Munirka, RK Puram, Patel Chowk, Vishwavidyalaya, GTB Nagar, Shivaji Stadium, ITO, IIT, Delhi Gate and Pragati Maidan. 

Trains will not be halting at these stations, according to an official of DMRC. Meanwhile, the Gate number 3 of Ashram metro station, which was closed earlier, has been opened, he added. Students and other people continued to gather outside  the PHQ, with the number of agitators swelling up.(UNI)

Jamia protests: Six policemen injured, Schools closed

New Delhi:The protest outside the Jamia Campus area turned violent on Sunday, with mob pelting stones at the police, leaving six police personnel injured, police said here.

Meanwhile, the Delhi government has ordered to close all the government and private schools falling under the South-East Delhi, including Okhla, Jamia, New Friends Colony and Madan Pur Khadar area. Police clarified that there has been no casualty during the police efforts to maintain the law and order.

According to Delhi Police PRO DCP Mandeep Randhawa,  police was present at the site and the protest was peaceful till afternoon. After a while, some anti-social elements joined the protestors and instigated them, diverting the route of the peaceful protest march.

Police has also appealed to the people not to believe on rumours spread over the social media, where some doctored photographs are being circulated to instigate the people.He said the anti-social elements set buses and two-wheelers on fire, while they were pushed back, as they tried to move towards the Mathura Road.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, South East district Chinmoy Biswal said the police's only  interest was to push the violent  mob back, in view of restoring the law and order  in the area, while there was  no problem with the varsity (Jamia Millia Islamia University) students.

Police has also denied any allegation of firing during the protests, calling it a rumour, which was being spread to scar the image of Delhi Police.Police said that certain people have also been detained during the ongoing situation and their identities were yet to be established.(UNI)
