NHRC notice to Jharkhand govt over pregnant woman 'not attended' for nearly 27 hrs at Jamshedpur hospital, resulting in baby's death

New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) sought a report from the Jharkhand Government regarding the reported incident where a woman in labour was left lying on the floor without treatment for 27 hours at Jamshedpur MGM Hospital, resulting in the death of her baby in the womb.
 
In a notice to the Chief Secretary, the commission requested a detailed report on the matter within two weeks.
 
The report to include the status of the health of the victim woman and the availability of beds as well as other facilities in the government hospitals, the NHRC said.
 
The report should also mention if any compensation has been paid to the aggrieved family by the authorities, it added.
 
The NHRC took suo motu cognisance of a media report that a pregnant woman in labour pain was not attended for about 27 hours at MGM hospital, Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, after she was referred by a Community Health Centre for better medical care. Reportedly, she had to lie on the floor as there was no bed available in the hospital.
 
However, after receiving no treatment, her child died in the womb the next day. It was also reported that another woman, who had just given birth, was being treated on the floor.
