Over 1000 shifted from low lying areas in rain-flooded Vadodara city in Gujarat

Vadodara: Vadodara city of Gujarat has been flooded due to extremely heavy downpour of 499 mm in just a day on Wednesday, and the rescue agencies have so far shifted over a thousand people from the low lying areas to safer places, sources said on Thursday.Army, NDRF, SDRF etc have been deployed for rescue and relief work. 
The NDRF teams have taken out people from several flooded areas to safer places.
The city has seen 50.48 per cent of the seasonal rain in just one day taking the cumulative figures to 91.65 per cent, the sources further said.
 
Vishwamitri river which flows near the city has been flooded too. The gates of Ajwa dam has been opened. Schools and colleges in the city have been closed for the day in the wake of the situation.CM Vijay Rupani had taken stock of the situation and deputed two senior IAS officers to monitor and supervise the relief and rescue situation.
       
Meanwhile, locals are facing difficulties due to the rain. Long queues are being seen for essentials like milk in the city where supply has also been hampered. People in many societies were also compelled to live on upper floors of the building due to water logging in the lower parts.
 
According to the IMD,  even as monsoon has crossed the half way mark ,with regard to its period of span, Gujarat has so far received 46.15 per cent of its seasonal average. In July, the state received 222.37mm rain.
 
North Gujarat has got the minimum at 31.11 per cent, Kutch has got 35.45 per cent ( 142 mm) of rainfall. East Central Gujarat has got 38.43 per cent, Saurashtra 42.15 per cent and South Gujarat has got maximum both in terms of volume as well as percentage terms 60.58 per cent (859mm).District-wise Valsad has received the maximum in terms of both percentage and volume with 68.50 (1508mm). 
 
In percentage terms Gandhinagar is the district with minimum rain at 23.15 (172mm) but Kutch was at the lowest rung in terms of volume.(UNI)
