New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has lauded Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dr Dhananjaya Yeshwant Chandrachud's statement that the Supreme Court will be trying to make its judgments available in all Indian regional languages.
"At a recent function, the CJI Justice DY Chandrachud spoke of the need to work towards making SC judgments available in regional languages. He also suggested the use of technology for it. This is a laudatory thought, which will help many people, particularly youngsters," the PM Modi has tweeted.
The CJI said this yesterday while speaking at an event organised by the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa to felicitate him.
The CJI Chandrachud had, on Saturday, said that the next step for the Indian judiciary in an increasingly digitised world would be to make Supreme Court judgments available in all Indian languages.
The CJI said that the next step for the Indian judiciary in an increasingly digitised world would be to make Supreme Court judgments available in all Indian languages, possibly with the help of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools.
"I met with a professor of Madras who works in AI and the next step is to have translated copies of Supreme Court judgments in every Indian language," the CJI had said this while speaking at an event organised by the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa to felicitate him.
"Judgments in English would not be of use to a rural litigant who does not understand the tenor or niceties of English," the CJI had added.
"Unless we reach out to citizens in a language that they can understand, in a manner they can comprehend, the work which we do will not reach 99 percent of our population," the CJI had said.
The PM in his tweet said the Central government is also making numerous efforts to encourage Indian languages to study in different subjects.
"India has several languages, which add to our cultural vibrancy. The Central Government is undertaking numerous efforts to encourage Indian languages including giving the option of studying subjects like engineering and medicine in one’s Matru Bhasha," the PM said in his tweet. (UNI)
