New Delhi/Kyiv: The Indian students evacuated from Sumy are expected to arrive in India tonight on flights under Operation Ganga.

Puneet Singh Chandhok, an activist and President Indian World Forum, said in a tweet that the Indian students evacuated from war-hit Sumy yesterday arrived in Poltava, in central Ukraine, and had boarded the train to Lviv, on the western border.

He said a team of the Indian Embassy was on board the train with them. The Indian students are expected to arrive back home at midnight.

On Tuesday, the 500-odd Indian students stranded in Sumy were moved out of the eastern Ukrainian city, the MEA had informed.

The Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said the students would board a train to western Ukrainian and that flights under Operation Ganga are being readied to bring them home.

“Happy to inform that we have been able to move out all Indian students from Sumy. They are currently en route to Poltava, from where they will board trains to western Ukraine. Flights under #OperationGanga are being prepared to bring them home,” he said in a tweet on Tuesday evening.

The students from Sumy State University were unable to leave due to the large-scale fighting going on there. They were able to move out after Russia announced a local ceasefire and setting up of humanitarian corridors to allow civilians to evacuate the place.

PM Modi in his phone conversation with the Russian and Ukrainian leadership on Monday had urged for support to bring out the Indians from Sumy. (UNI)
