SC refuses urgent hearing for quashing CBFC certificate of 'Padmavat'

SC refuses urgent hearing for quashing CBFC certificate of 'Padmavat'

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday refused to entertain plea seeking quashing of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) certificate clearing for screening of the controversial Hindi film 'Padmavat'. While refusing to entertain the petition filed by the lawyer, Manohar Lal Sharma, a three-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra, and also comprising Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud, said, the court has to function as a constitutional court and it has already yesterday in its interim order had said that the states cannot block a movie from screening.

The petitioner submitted before the court that in the light of law and order problems in various states, this court should quash the CBFC certificate. 'We held the decision of the CBFC yesterday, and today, we could not hear your plea. The law and order is not our job that is the job of the government and thus rejected the lawyer's plea,' the bench added. The petitioner said that the issuance of certificate by CBFC was against the law. This comes a day after the Supreme Court, in its interim order, cleared the decks for the nationwide release of Hindi film 'Padmavat'.(UNI)
