Pune: Renowned social activist, writer and Rajya Sabha Member Sudha Murty will get the Lokmanya Tilak National Award this year, according to the trust that bestows the honour.
The Lokmanya Tilak Smarak Trust said Murty would be awarded in recognition of her contribution to rural development, literature and social work.
The Trustees said her efforts aligned with Lokmanya Tilak’s principles of Swadeshi and human development. Dr. Rohit Tilak, The Trustee board head, announced the award at a press conference on Saturday.
The award ceremony will be held on Thursday, August 1, on the 104th death anniversary of Lokmanya Tilak, at Maharashtra Sadan, New Delhi.
Since 1983, the Lokmanya Tilak National Award has honoured individuals for their selfless services to the nation, with S. M. Joshi being the first recipient. Former Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi, Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Dr. Manmohan Singh are among the awardees. Incumbent Prime Minister Narendra Modi received the award last year.
