Tiruchirapalli (Tamil Nadu): Sleuths of the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Customs department seized 2.291 kilogram of Gold ornaments valued at Rs 1.53 crore from a woman passenger arrived at Tiruchirapalli international airport from Malaysia late on Tuesday.
Customs officials said here on Wednesday that a team of AIU officials conducted a search on passengers arriving from Kuala Lumpur through Air India Express flight.
On examination, the officials found a woman passenger possessing the gold in the form of chains, bangles and rings. The golden jewels, of 24-karat and 22-karat purity, were confiscated as she attempted to smuggle them to India without paying customs duty.
The passenger has been arrested and further investigation is under progress, the sources added.
