Tiruchirapalli (Tamil Nadu): In a major seizure in the recent times, sleuths of the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Customs department seized a total of 2.579 kilogram of gold valued at Rs 1.83 crore from a passenger arrived at Tiruchirapalli International Airport from Dubai on Thursday night.
Official sources said here on Friday that based on specific intelligence, a huge quantity of gold being smuggled into India through a “carrier,” a team of AIU officials conducted a search on passengers arriving from Dubai through Air India Express flight.
On examination, the officials found that a passenger was smuggling the yellow metal in the form of plates and was concealed inside a juice mixer.
The passenger has been arrested and further investigation is under progress, the sources added.
