Kanpur: A major road accident took place in Kanpur city late on Sunday night in which an e-bus hit several vehicles near Tatmill crossing leaving 6 people dead and 9 injured, police said on Monday.

The condition of many of the injured is said to be critical.

According to the police said the accident happened when an out of control e-bus going from Ghantaghar to Tatmil hit about half a dozen vehicles after it crossed over to the wrong side.

A scooty and bike got stuck in the bus and were dragged for about fifty meters.

According to eyewitnesses, the incident happened around midnight when the speeding e-bus coming from Clock Tower towards Tatmill went out of control as soon as it came down from the bridge.

First the bus hit a rickshaw and then it hit the e-rickshaw which was travelling in front of it.

It is believed that the bus driver was in an inebriated state, because after hitting these vehicles, the bus went completely out of control and on to the wrong side.

Once on the wrong side the bus rammed any vehicle that came in its path crushing them.

In total two cars, two bikes and a scooty were rammed by the bus between Krishna Hospital to Tatamil intersection.

The bus came to a halt after breaking the signal pole at Tatmill intersection and colliding with a traffic booth. After the bus stopped the driver fled from the spot.

So far among the deceased the police have managed to identify only three people and they are 24-year-old Shubham Sonkar, 25-year-old Sunil alias Tinkle Sonkar and 24-year-old Aslam.

A rickshaw driver is also said to be among the dead, whom the bus hit in the beginning.

DCP East Pramod Kumar Singh said that the injured are being treated in the hospital and a manhunt has been launched to catch the absconding driver.

Meanwhile President Ram Nath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra have expressed grief on the death of the people in the accident. (Inputs from UNI)
