New Delhi: Responding to a question over its "double standard" as Washington showed support for the political Opposition in India but remain silent on the treatment of opposition in Pakistan, the United States on Thursday asserted that it does not agree with "that characterisation".

“I would not agree with that characterisation,” US State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller said on being asked about the United States' strong position on Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kerjiwal's arrest and freezing of Congress bank accounts, but not on the political prisoners in Pakistan.

“We have made it clear on a number of occasions that we want to see everyone in Pakistan treated consistent with the rule of law and treated with respect for human rights, as is our position with respect to any country in the world,” Miller said.
