A 30-year-old woman has converted to Hinduism and married an 18-year-old Class 12 student in a temple ceremony in Amroha, Uttar Pradesh.

According to Hasanpur Circle Officer Deep Kumar Pant, the woman, Shivani, was previously known as Shabnam, has three children and has been married twice before.

Her first marriage in Meerut ended in divorce, and her second marriage to Taufiq, who was disabled in a road accident, also faced complications.

Recently, she developed a relationship with a 18-year-old Class 12 boy.

Last Friday, Shabnam formally divorced Taufiq. Later, she converted to Hinduism and adopted the name Shivani. Then, she married the 18-year-old in a temple ceremony.

Speaking to reporters, the father of boy said that he supports his son’s decision. “As long as they are happy together, we have no objection. We just wish them a peaceful and contented life,” he said.

Notably, UP is a state which has an anti-conversion law in place. The Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, 2021 bars religious conversion through force, deceit or any other fraudulent means.

Police are currently reviewing the circumstances surrounding the marriage, but no legal complaints have been filed so far.
