New Delhi: All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kaghazam General Secretary VK Sasikala's dreams of aspiring to be the next Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu were dashed, as the Supreme Court restored her conviction in a disproportionate assets case.

A bench, headed by Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghose and also comprising Justice Amitava Roy, in a concurring judgment, expressed deep concern over the "escalating menace of corruption in society". Restoring the trial court judgment, which had convicted and sentenced her and her two relatives -- VN Sudhakaran and J. Elavarasi-- the apex court set aside the Karnataka High Court order acquitting the three and late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa.

The court's order essentially means that Ms Sasikala is out of any kind of electoral field for 10 years - four years in incarceration and six years of disqualification under the Representation of Peoples (RP) Act after her release. (UNI)
