'DMK-sponsored bandh hits life in Delta districts of TN, Stalin detained'

Tiruvarur: DMK Working President MK Stalin was among hundreds of party cadres were detained, when they attempted to stage a massive protest in Tiruvarur, as the day-long State-wide bandh called by DMK-led opposition parties in support of drought-hit farmers evoked huge response in Cauvery Delta Districts of Tamil Nadu, today.
 

Mr Stalin, accompanied by former Union Minister TR.Baalu and senior party leaders, besides hundreds of cadres of Congress, CPM. CPI, VCK, IUML, farmers and traders took out a rally from Therkku Veedhi to the new bus stand at Tiruvarur, where they staged a demonstration this morning. Police detained Mr.Stalin and the protesters. Former DMK Minister K.N.Nehru among 500 DMK men courted arrest after attempting a blockade at the Central Bus Stand in Tiruchirapalli.

Police arrested several farmers, including P.R.Pandian, President of the Coordination Committee of All Tamil Nadu Farmers Association, when they blocked the Thanjavur-Karaikkal passenger train at Kulikkarai in Tiruvarur district demanding setting up of Cauvery Management Board (CMB). Police arrested DMK men for staging road-roko at Alangudi in Pudukottai. Reports reaching here said thousands of volunteers of various political parties and farmers were detained across Southern, Central and Delta districts for attempting rail and road roko agitations.
