J&K: 1200-year-old goddess Durga sculpture recovered in Budgam

Srinagar: A 1200-year-old sculpture of goddess Durga was recovered from central Kashmir district of Budgam, a police official said.

He said the sculpture, which is roughly from 7th-8th century, was handed over to department of Archives, Archaeology and Museums, J&K government.

Giving details, he said that following specific information on Monday afternoon, police recovered one ancient sculpture from Khansahab area in Budgam. “Accordingly officers team of department of Archives, Archaeology & Museums was called for examination of the recovered sculpture,” he said.

He said the team on Tuesday reported at District Police Office Budgam and established that the sculpture is of goddess Durga, which dates back roughly to 7th-8th AD (about 1200 years old).

“The sculpture is 12 inches by 08 inches carved in a black stone. This sculpture is of goddess Durga seated on a lion throne alongwith four attendants,” he said.

He said the recovered sculpture was handed over formally to Mushtaq Ahmad Beigh Deputy Director Department of Archives, Archaeology & Museums and his team by SSP Budgam Tahir Saleem Khan.

“The sculpture was found from river Jhelum at Pandrethan in Srinagar by labourers who were extracting sand from river on August 13, 2021,” he added. (UNI)
