Bengaluru: A man attempted to end his life by allegedly slitting his throat in the presence of Chief Justice Nilay Vipinchandra Anjaria, on the premises of Karnataka High Court here on Wednesday, police said.

The man, identified as Srinivas from Mysuru, handed over a file to the security staff before carrying out the act, police said.

Despite immediate response from security personnel, Srinivas managed to inflict self-harm and was promptly taken to Bowring Hospital for treatment, they added.

Authorities are puzzled over the motive behind Srinivas's extreme action, as no suicide note was found at the scene.

"We don't know why he took such an extreme step. He entered Court Hall One and slit his throat with a knife. Our security staff deployed inside saw it happen and immediately rescued him. He is hospitalised," he said.

Chief Justice Anjaria expressed alarm at the security breach and questioned how Srinivas was able to bring a sharp object into the court premises.

An investigation is underway to determine the contents of the file Srinivas submitted, though the court has stated that it will not examine documents not presented by designated advocates without prior authorization.

Pending Srinivas's recovery, police intend to record his statement to shed light on the circumstances leading to his suicide attempt.
