School teacher arrested on charge of raping minor student in Arunachal Pradesh

Itanagar: A teacher of a government higher secondary school in Arunachal Pradesh’s Pasighat has been arrested on charge of raping one of his 16-year-old students, a senior police officer said on Monday.

Reportedly, the student was brutally raped by her English teacher, Nong Jamoh (38) on Saturday evening. The victim was called by the teacher at his residence (a government quarters) on the pretext of discussing the syllabus for the exam.

“Nong Jamoh, a resident of Yagrung village in East Siang district, was arrested in the wee hours of Sunday. He has been sent to judicial custody for 14 days”, East Siang district Superintendent of Police Sumit Kumar Jha said.

He said that the minor, who was in a very serious condition and had to be operated on, is still in the hospital and is recuperating.

“She is not in a position to give her statement. It will be taken in due course of time,” the SP said.

The information was received on Saturday at the Pasighat Women’s Police Station that a case of sexual assault has been reported at Bakin Pertin General Hospital, Pasighat. The accused teacher, who was absconding after allegedly committing the misdemeanor and changing his hideouts intermittently, was arrested in the intervening night of August 20-21 with the help of family members and others, the SP said.

Earlier, on receipt of the information, a special team consisting of Token Saring APPS, Pasighat PS OC Inspector Otu Gao, Inspector Abraham Taying, Mebo Police Outpost in-charge SI Aditya Chandra, SI S Machey and L/SI Oyin Tari of Pasighat WPS was formed and all the suspected locations of the accused were raided simultaneously.

“The victim is still under observation of doctors and her condition has improved,” the SP said.

He said that an FIR case U/S 376 (2) (f) (3) of IPC read with Section 6 of POCSO Act was registered at the Pasighat Women Police Station and further investigation is on. (UNI)
