Etah (Uttar Pradesh): A 24-year-old rape convict allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself inside the Etah district jail under mysterious circumstances, Police sources said on Tuesday.
An inquiry has been recommended into the incident.
The sources said that Shajid, a resident of Hindu Nagar, was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment in rape and Pocso case in 2021 and since then he was lodged in Etah district jail. "Late on Monday night he hanged himself with a scarf and committed suicide," they said.
Jail Superintendent Amit Chaudhary said that Shajid, who was convicted in rape and Pocso case, committed suicide inside the jail on Monday night. He said that an administrative as well as judicial inquiry has been recommended into the incident.
