Ballia (UP): A couple was taken ill allegedly after consuming poison laced biscuits inside the district jail, police sources said here on Thursday.

While the woman died at the district hospital during treatment late on Wednesday night, her husband has been referred to Varanasi, sources said.

Police sources said Suraj Sahani (25) was lodged in the district jail since June 7, 2021 in connection with murder of his cousin Vishal Sahani. "On Wednesday Suraj's wife Neelam (23) came to meet him during which the couple ate biscuits and fell unconscious," they said.
Police sources said that the couple was rushed to the district hospital from where Suraj was referred to the trauma center at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in a serious condition. "Neelam died at the district hospital during treatment," they said.

Police sources said that before Neelam's death a case was lodged against her on the complaint of the jailor. (UNI)
