The big teams packing bags one by one and the low profile teams surging ahead in the tournament have been the trend so far. Let’s have a look at the upset victories of this world cup.
Mexico- Germany (1-0)
The very first upset of the FIFA world cup was witnessed when the defending champion Germany lost it to Mexico by 1-0 in the opener.
Japan- Columbia (2-1)
Japan became the first ever Asian team to defeat a South-American team in the world cup by defeating Columbia by 2-1 in the group stage.Later, Japan also surged into pre-quarterfinal.
Senegal –Poland (2-1)
Like year 2002, Senegal team sent shock waves in this world cup too. The African team defeated 8th ranked team Poland in the group stage.
Croatia- Argentina (3-0)
This was a shocker when a low profile team defeated Messi led football giant Argentina mercilessly. Croatia didn’t allow Argentina to score and won the match by 3-0.
South Korea- Germany (2-0)
This upset will be remembered by both the teams for a long time. 2014 WC champion Germany lost the first ever match to an Asian team and had an unceremonious early exit.
Russia- Spain (1-1) 4-3
Backed by the home crowd Russia too pulled off a stunner. After leveling with 4th ranked and WC winning team Spain, the Russians got over the line in penalty shootouts vs Spain in Pre quarterfinal.
Belgium- Brazil (2-1)
Belgium showed the exit door to one of the favorite of FIFA WC 2018 in the quarterfinal. Brazil also did a self goal and failed to qualify for the semifinal.
