BAN vs WI, 2nd Test, Day 1: West Indies 223/5 at stumps against Bangladesh

Dhaka: West Indies were 223/5 at stumps on the first day of the second Test against Bangladesh, here on Thursday.

Bonner (74*) and Joshua Da Silva (22) were unbeaten as things were evenly poised for both the teams at stumps on Day 1.

For Bangladesh, Abu Jayed and Taijul Islam took two wickets each, while Soumya Sarkar a wicket as well.

Earlier, West Indies opted to bat, and started well, with captain Kraigg Brathwaite and John Campbell putting on a solid partnership of 66 for the opening wicket.

First breakthrough came for hosts via the left-arm spin of Taijul as Campbell was promptly trapped in front. In came Shayne Moseley, and alongside Brathwaite, they took West Indies into lunch at a healthy 84/1, looking good for a lot more.

However, Bangladesh got right back into the contest in the second session. Shortly after the restart, they had Moseley dismissed.

Brathwaite, with Kyle Mayers, looked to grind out any momentum Bangladesh gained from that dismissal, but their brief partnership was broken when the West Indies captain was caught at slip. He fell just three short of a half-century.

Bangladesh weren’t done yet, as Mayers was dismissed by Javed and West Indies slid to 116/4.

Thankfully for the visitors, Bonner along with Jermaine Blackwood revived the innings. Bonner never got bogged down during his 74*, putting away six fours, and Blackwood provided strong support for the fifth wicket.

Bonner brought up his half-century in the final session, and looked good for more, but the dismissal of Blackwood applied the brakes on West Indies a tad.

Blackwood, having scored 28 off 77 deliveries, returned a catch to Taijul, but the reliable Joshua Da Silva partnered with Bonner for the remainder of the session, scoring 22* to help West Indies to a steady position by stumps. (UNI)
