Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Bollywood actor Suniel Shetty flag off Kashmir's first-ever International Marathon from Polo Ground Stadium Srinagar on Sunday.
Chief Minister Omar also participated in the marathon run, which was flagged off on Sunday morning from the Polo Ground Stadium Srinagar.
As many as 59 International Athletes are among the 2000 participating in the 42 km full marathon and 21 km half marathon. More than 30 Kashmiri athletes are also participating in the event as well.
The race will start from Polo View and will continue along the iconic Boulevard and Foreshore Road, passing the stunning Dal Lake en route to Hazratbal.
The event has been organised by the Department of Tourism with the aim to show the world that the situation has improved in the valley.
“To organise the marathon is to send a message across the globe that Kashmir is a peaceful fit to host international events," Director Tourism said.
Bollywood actor Suniel Shetty said on the occasion that “the people want to come to Kashmir, and an event like this gives a message to the entire world that the people from all over the world are coming here to participate, and it's a big thing."
He said Kashmir is a paradise for the world, and I will come here again and again.
The first prize for the full marathon is Rs 25,00,000, followed by Rs 20,00,000 for second place, Rs 18,00,000 for third, Rs 15,00,000 for fourth, and Rs 12,00,000 for the fifth position. Similarly, in the half marathon, the first-place winner will receive Rs 15,00,000, with Rs 12,00,000 for second, Rs 9,00,000 for third, Rs 6,00,000 for fourth, and Rs 3,00,000 for fifth.
To ensure the event runs smoothly, traffic police have issued an advisory, stating that traffic movement on various city routes will be suspended from 5 AM to 5 PM on the day of the marathon.
