New Delhi: The Congress on Monday distanced itself from the remarks made by its spokesperson Shama Mohammed on cricketer Rohit Sharma, saying the “party holds the contributions of sporting icons in the highest regard and does not endorse any statements that undermine their legacy.”

On his social media handle X, senior party leader Pawan Khera said that the remarks does not reflect the party’s position and has asked Shama Mohammed to delete the post from her handle.

“Dr Shama Mohammed, National Spokesperson of the Indian National Congress, made certain remarks about a cricketing legend that do not reflect the party's position,” Khera said in a post on X.

He said, “She has been asked to delete the concerned social media posts from X and has been advised to exercise greater caution in the future.”

“The Indian National Congress holds the contributions of sporting icons in the highest regard and does not endorse any statements that undermine their legacy,” Khera said.

It may be mentioned that the Congress leader in a now-deleted post on X had referred to Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma as “fat for a sportsman” and suggested that he should lose weight.

She had even called him the “most unimpressive captain India has ever had.”

Her remarks had not gone down well with Rohit Sharma's fans and cricket enthusiasts, leading to backlash from them.
