Birmingham: Jeremy Lalrinnunga bagged the second gold for India at the 2022 Commonwealth Games by setting a CWG record in the Men's 67kg weightlifting final.

The 19-year-old lifted 140kg in his second snatch after lifting 136kg in his first. In the clean and jerk category, he lifted 160kg, finishing off with a tally of 300kg, creating a new CWG record. This was India's fifth medal of the Games.

Despite lifting 154kg in the first clean and jerk, Jeremy looked in pain and stumbled back. Luckily, he came back strong and cut the ice by lifting 160kg, which won him the gold, though he failed to lift 165kg in the third attempt, which did not matter much, as he was leading far ahead of his competitors.

Samoa's Vaipova Ioane, who was in the fray for the silver medal, required a fiendish lift of 174kg to take gold, but failed. Nigeria's Edidiong Umoafia took the bronze by lifting a total of 290kg.

Jeremy shot to fame in 2018 Youth Olympics, where he won gold to lift a total of 274kg. Aged just 16 then, he contested the weightlifting World Championships in 2019 and finished 21st in the Men's 67kg event. (UNI)
