On Tuesday, Mayank was admitted to ILS Hospitals in Agartala after complaining of a burning sensation in his throat and mouth after drinking a liquid from a bottle on a flight. The flight had to return to Agartala thereafter.

Mayank experienced some oral irritation and swelling on the lips and was under observation for 24 hours.

Giving an account of the ordeal Mayank went through, TCA Working Secretary Basudeb Chakraborty said: "Around 4 pm to 4.30 pm, I received a message that Mayank Agarwal, due to emergency reasons, is being taken to ILS hospital. I immediately sent two to three Tripura Cricket Association (TCA) staff to the hospital.

"On reaching the hospital, they conveyed to me that there was a water bottle on the flight, and Mayank Agarwal drank it thinking it was water. After drinking, he felt a severe burning sensation in his throat.

"Mayank Agarwal went to the washroom, but the burning sensation did not recede. It was an Indigo flight. Then air hostesses kept the bottle and immediately rushed him to the ILS hospital in an ambulance," Chakraborty said.

The incident occurred when Mayank was flying from Agartala to Surat via New Delhi for Karnataka's fifth-round Ranji Trophy fixture against Railways starting on Friday.

Chakraborty also visited the hospital and found Mayank in a very bad condition, and added that the Karnataka player's face was swollen and he was unable to talk.

Later, the Karnataka team manager gave a written complaint to Tripura West Superintendent of Police K Kiran Kumar, and a case was registered under the jurisdiction of the New Capital Complex Police Station in Agartala.

Mayank has cracked two centuries and a half-century in the ongoing Ranji season. Karnataka are currently placed second in Group C with two wins, a draw and a defeat in four matches.

Nikin Jose, the 23-year-old batsman, is the designated vice-captain in the squad and is likely to take over the captaincy.
