Former Indian cricketer Salim Durrani passes away at 88, PM Modi pays tribute

Jamnagar: Former Indian cricket all-rounder Salim Durrani on Sunday passed away at the age of 88 at his house in Jamnagar, Gujarat.

His death was confirmed by sources close to the family. He had been living with his younger brother, Jahangir Durani, in Jamnagar, Gujarat.

He had undergone a proximal femoral nail surgery after he broke his thigh bone in a fall in January this year.

Durrani was a left-handed batter and left-arm spinner, and represented India in 29 Tests, scoring 1202 runs and taking 75 wickets.

In domestic cricket, He played Ranji Trophy for Saurashtra, Rajasthan and Gujarat, he was most famous for his outstanding performance in India's series victory against England in 1961-62.

PM Modi led heartfelt tributes for Durani. "Salim Durani Ji was a cricketing legend, an institution in himself. He made a key contribution to India’s rise in the world of cricket. On and off the field, he was known for his style. Pained by his demise. Condolences to his family and friends. May his soul rest in peace," PM tweeted.

Durrani was born in Afghanistan; He had Pashtun origins and was known for his batting and bowling prowess that left the spectators thrilled. (UNI)
