London: Skipper Aaron Finch’s 153 off 132 and Steven Smith’s 73 off 59 and a brilliant 173 runs partnership for the third wicket helped Australia beat Sri Lanka by 87 runs in the ICC Cricket World Cup here at The Oval on Saturday.
Mitchell Starc 4/55, Richardson 3/47 came handy in outclassing Lanka which got an initial good start in the match but failed to build onto the momentum later in the match.
Cummins picked last wicket of Pradeep in the 46th over wrapping up the Sri Lankan innings for 247 runs in 45.5 overs.
With this win, Australia have jumped from earlier third spot to numero uno and from five matches have eight points pipping New Zealand to second spot while England have slided to third and India remains at the fourth spot. (UNI)
