Kolkata: National shooter Konica Layak, who won several shooting championships, was found dead in a guest house at Bally (Howrah), close to Kolkata, on Wednesday, West Bengal police investigating the unnatural death of a sportsperson said on Thursday.

Policemen, who broke open the door on Wednesday evening after repeated knocks on the door were not responded, found the 26-year-old national-level shooter was hanging to a rope in her room. Police also found a "suicide note" from the dead shooter, who was depressed for not doing enough as a shooter.

She was staying in the guest house as a paying guest as the place is close to her training station in Uttarpara in the Hooghly district.

Konica, originally a resident of Dhansar Anugrahnagar, Dhanbad, (Jharkhand) was undergoing training at the Uttarpara coaching camp of Olympian Jaideep Karmakar. Police also took possession of the mobile phone of the dead for further investigation. The body was sent for postmortem on Thursday.

After getting the information, the parents reached there late last night.

Konica, who won four gold and silver medals at the state level, came into the limelight when despite being selected in the national team, she could not participate in the national tournament due to lack of a rifle.

Then actor and philanthropist Sonu Sood gifted her a German rifle worth Rs 2.70 lakh. Sood also spoke to her on a video call, in which he said that she should now practice diligently and win medals. (Inputs from UNI)
