London: Daniil Medvedev stormed into his first Wimbledon quarterfinals without much angst as Jiri Lehecka retired due to injury when the Russian led 6-4, 6-2 here on Monday.
Medvedev did not expect the match to finish off abruptly because Lehecka got resumed soon after receiving treatment to his foot after the opening set.
Medvedev next plays world No.43 Christopher Eubanks.
The Russian sealed the opener 6-4 by asserting himself on the proceedings from the start of the faceoff. He served out the second set 6-2 after breaking Lehecka twice in the second set.
Medvedev will lock horns with Eubanks in his first quarterfinals at Wimbledon. The unseeded American had a dream comeback from two sets to one down to trounce Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Eubanks and his Greek opponent had shared the first two sets each, but the American punched back to ull the final set in his favour, continuing with his dream run at the Grand Slam. (UNI)
