New Delhi: Veteran India leg-spinner Piyush Chawla’s father Pramod Kumar Chawla passed away on Monday due to COVID-19 complications.

The spinner’s father was undergoing treatment at a hospital in Delhi after testing positive for COVID-19.

“Life won’t be same without him anymore, lost my pillar of strength today,” wrote Chawla on his Instagram account.

“With deepest grief, we announce that my beloved father, Pramod Kumar Chawla, left for the heavenly abode on 10th May 2021. He was suffering from covid and post covid complications. We invite your kind thoughts and prayers in this difficult times. May his noble soul rest in peace,” it added.

Chawla’s latest IPL team Mumbai Indians too offered their condolences.

“Our thoughts go out to Piyush Chawla who lost his father, Pramod Kumar Chawla this morning. We are with you and your family in this difficult time. Stay strong,” tweeted Mumbai Indians.

Chawla, who was part of India’s 2011 World Cup-winning team, made his international debut in 2006.

The 32-year old has played three Tests, 25 ODIs and 7 T20s for India. He represents Gujarat in the domestic circuit and has so far played 136 first-class matches, taking 445 wickets in it.

The leg-spinner was roped in by Mumbai Indians in the auction this year after being released by Chennai Super Kings. However, he did not play a single game in the IPL 2021, which was indefinitely suspended due to COVID-19 outbreak in its bio-bubble. (UNI)
