New York City:India's top-ranked men's singles tennis player Sumit Nagal's US Open 2020 campaign came to an end in the 2nd round after he lost to World No 3 and 2nd seed Dominic Thiem.
Nagal went down 3-6, 3-6, 2-6 to Thiem, who celebrated his 27th birthday with a commanding performance in the second round at the Athur Ashe stadium on Thursday.
The Indian player, who had become the 1st Indian men's singles player to win a Grand Slam main draw match in 7 years on Tuesday, showed some glimpses of promise, but couldn't capitalise on that as Thiem wrapped up the match with ease.
"I was playing well today. I had a good plan for the match. He's very dangerous when he can dictate with his forehand. I was trying to avoid that. He also has very, very fast legs,' said Thiem after the match.
'I was trying to play my fastest tennis to keep him on the backhand, to not let him dictate with the forehand. I did that very well today," he added. The Austrian will now challenge 2014 champion Marin Cilic of Croatia in the third round.(UNI)
