Tokyo Olympics silver-medalist Saikhom Mirabai Chanu stands a chance to get medal upgrade in the 49kg women’s weightlifting competition. China’s Hou Zhizhi, who bagged the gold in the category, will be tested by anti-doping authorities. If Zhizhi fails the dope test, Chanu will be awarded the gold.
"She has been asked to stay in Tokyo and the test will be done. The test is definitely happening," a source in the know of developments told ANI.
China's Hou Zhihui set an Olympic record with a lift of 210 kgs (94+116) on Saturday.
However, Mirabai Chanu lifted a total of 202 kg (87kg+115kg) and became the first Indian weightlifter to win a silver at Olympics.
The rules clearly state, if an athlete fails the doping test, then the athlete who has won silver, will be awarded the gold.
