Wellington: The inaugural ICC Under-19 Women's World Cup in January 2023 will be played in T20 format and the host will be decided in a board meeting in a week's time, said the ICC CEO Geoff Allardice on Tuesday.

"The U19 World Cup is scheduled in January 2023 and the format will be T20," said Allardice while addressing an online media conference ahead of the Women's World Cup 2022 knockout matches in New Zealand.

"The host of the tournament will be decided in a board meeting in a week's time," he added.

The world cricket governing body had decided to hold the maiden event during a board meeting in October 2019.

Originally, the Under-19 Women's World Cup was scheduled to take place in January 2021 but it was moved back to December 2021 due to Covid-19 pandemic.

In January 2022, Allardice had said that the tournament was "very much on the cards".

Allardice also said that the hosts of next cycle of women's cricket events (2024-27) will be confirmed in July 2022. (UNI)
